USC Athletic Director Eric Hyman announced in a press conference Monday that head basketball coach Dave Odom has signed a 10-year contract extension.
"We are pleased to have Coach Odom with the university for another decade," Hyman said. "While his on-court achievements have not been quite up to par, he's a really nice guy."
Odom, who originally retired on Jan. 18, said that the move was made to further improve the state of the basketball program.
"I realized shortly after the season concluded that retiring was the wrong decision," Odom said in a statement released by the university. "I believe that the school is in dire need of my coaching abilities, particularly in the last two minutes of games."
Odom is now signed through the 2017-2018 season and will make roughly $9.06 per game, with incentives that include a $50 bonus for qualifying for the NCAA Tournament and a $1000 bonus for making the NIT.
Odom is excited about what the team can accomplish this upcoming season.
"We really feel like we compete with some of the best teams in the country," Odom said. "We truly believe that we can win a few games and hopefully make the NIT or CBI."
Hyman expressed confidence that Odom can get the job done.
"The university and I have the utmost faith in coach Odom that he can get the Gamecocks to compete in the lower half of the SEC on a consistent basis," Hyman said.
Not only did Odom sign his extension Monday, but also announced big plans for the USC basketball program for the upcoming season.
Odom stated that due to the unexplainable dwindling fan support, a tarp will now cover the upper deck for the next season.
Also, in order to continue bridging the gap with alumni, the university will retire former basketball players Ousmane Konate's and Keving Palacios' jerseys.
Coaches around the Southeastern Conference expressed their happiness that Odom was returning to coach in the conference.
"Having Coach Odom in the league is a blessing, it really is," said Tennessee head coach Bruce Pearl. "We really appreciate him helping us boost our player's season statistics on a yearly basis."
Kentucky head coach Billy Gillespie added the following:
"Who is Dave Odom?"
Odom's return officially ends the rumors that current Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski was headed to USC to coach the Gamecocks.
Krzyzewski could not be reached for comment.
